Traditional Recipe Restaurant

Craving for bak chang and hate waking up early to go to the pasar pagi? Afraid no more. Traditional Recipe Restaurant which is located at the Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara serves bak chang all year long. You don't need to wait for the Bak Chang festival to have your bak chang.

Apart from serving different types of bak chang, this restaurant serves Hakka dishes too. Some famous Hakka dishes like "thunder tea rice" (lui char fan), stuffed tofu (yong tau fu), meat pies (yuk pheang) and my favourite Hakka yam abacus beads (suan pan ji).
We have visited this restaurant twice in less than a month (this shows how much we like the food here) and we ordered bak chang and abacus beads on both visits.

Lets start with some bak changs...
Photobucket
Golden Bak Chang
This is LKC's favourite. Stuffed in the bak chang were chicken, chinese sausage, pork, salted egg, chinese mushroom, chestnut, beans and of course not to forget the glutinous rice. Priced at RM8.50, this bak chang tasted very yummy. Neither too salty nor too bland. One thing good is the pork meat that they used. They used lean meat instead of 3 layers meat (3 chang yuk), which made the chang less oily.
Photobucket
Hakka Chang
Hakka chang has always been one of my favourite chang because of the ingredients stuffed in the chang. Priced at RM6 (I think it's only RM4-5 if you get it from wet market), it has pork meat, chinese mushroom, salted egg, chestnut, dried shrimp and peanuts stuffed in the chang. I would prefer it in beans (don't know what is it called) than in peanuts. Anyway, this chang tasted delicious apart from the sinful pork meat that they used.
Photobucket
Cantonese Chang
Similar with the Hakka Chang, this Cantonese chang has pork meat, chinese mushroom, salted egg and chestnut stuffed in the glutinous rice. They used some beans (sorry, don't know how to read Chinese) instead of peanuts and it was only RM5. You might think that I would prefer this chang than the Hakka chang as they used beans. Nope, I didn't really like this. Still prefer the Hakka Chang. Not because I'm Hakka and bias on Hakka dish only. It is because I prefer my bak chang to be in darker colour instead. Somehow I feel that white chang doesn't attract my attention at all. Racist? Maybe...

Enough of changs...lets move on to some side dishes...
Photobucket
Hakka Yam Abacus Beads
My all-time favourite, Hakka Yam Abacus Beads. It is very hard to find this dish nowadays as I think it's a tedious task to prepare this dish. Fyi, Hakka yam abacus beads is made out of mashed yam mixed with flour and shaped into round pellets that look like abacus beads. The beads were stir fried with dried shrimps, shredded chinese mushroom and chinese preserved vegetable (choy pou). Priced at only RM6.90, this dish was definitely value for money.
Photobucket
Salted Fish Meat Cake
Tasted exactly like the one that my mum used to cook, this salted fish meat cake cost RM5.50 for 3 pieces. It's kinda pricey though but with the taste like a home-cooked dish, what else can you ask for?

It's desserts time...
Photobucket
Soya Bean Sesame Glutinous Rice Ball
Now we don't need to wait till MidWinter Season to have tong yuen. Before ordering this, I thought that it was another frozen tong yuen served with soya bean. I was really surprised when I found out that the tong yuens were much more smaller than the frozen one. The sesame filling was generous and it wasn't too sweet. The best of all is of course the price. Selling at the price of RM4.50 and with the generous amount of glutinous rice balls, this is definitely something must try!
Photobucket
Soya Bean Snow Jelly
On our second visit, we had this soya bean snow jelly as our dessert. Priced at RM10 per bowl, imho I think it was kinda overpriced. Snow jelly is neither cheap nor expensive. I'm not sure what type of snow jelly that they used here but it was so much different from the one that my mum always prepares. We didn't really enjoy this dessert as both LKC and I didn't like ginkgo as well.
Photobucket
Green tea
They also served different types of Chinese teas like Wulong tea, Jasmine Tea, Kwan Yin tea and etc with price ranged from RM3-5. IMHO again, this was overpriced as well as they were just using the normal tea bags that you can get from the supermarket with the price of RM20 for 50 bags.

Excuse me!

Excuse me with all the food posts posted lately. Some were actually quite out-dated posts but I was just lazy to blog about it. Besides that, I have nothing much to update. Life seems to be quite boring lately. Working life is as usual, neither too busy nor too free. Apart from blogging on food, there is nothing much I can blog about.
Well, some of you might have known it, LKC and I are busy looking for properties. Planning to get our very first home-sweet-home end of this year. A lot of researches need to be done like checking on the area, the developer, the price, the design and etc. It is not something easy as I thought. We've thought of staying back in PJ area but due our budget constraint, we will have limited choices to choose from. With the budget that we have, we can only eye on areas like Puchong, Gombak, Klang and etc, which are not in our list.
So it is now money vs location. How I wish we're super rich, at least we'll have one less thing to consider. I need to go to buy lottery now. What's the prize for the Sports Toto Jackpot now?

CốDô Vietnamese Restaurant
Craving for some Vietnamese crusine? Getting bored with the famous The Vietnam Kitchen? You can give it a try at CốDô Vietnamese Restaurant when you are at Mid Valley. It's located at the third floor of Mid Valley, on top of the Little Vietnam and opposite the Studio R House.

The "cop mohor" is for good luck
The menu selection was quite huge. From Vietnamese dim-sum to noodles. From ala-carte meal to set meal for 2/ 4. I had a difficult time in deciding what to have for dinner as the menu itself already looked very tempting. We spending like 20 minutes looking at the menu, finally we made up our mind. I ordered the Spring Roll Platter and LKC had Spicy Hue Beef Soup Hu Tieu.
Photobucket
Spring Roll Platter
This spring roll platter consisted of 2 pumpkin spring rolls, 2 deep fried rice paper rolls, 2 pieces of mango and crabstick parcels, 2 pieces of banana and red bean parcels, and one Vietnamese spring roll. Priced at RM16.90, this spring roll platter was quite worth the money. The spring rolls tasted nice and special. Ever tried eating fried banana with chilli sauce? Try it all here.
Photobucket
Spicy Hue Beef Soup Hu Tieu
Spicy Hue Beef Soup Hu Tieu, priced at RM14, was one of the "must-try" item on the menu. Served with a plate of raw beansprout (the way Vietnamese and Thais prefer), this spicy noodle didn't really taste spicy and it was rather bland. As the name suggested, there were some beef balls, beef slices and some beef internal organs in this bowl of noodle. I think this should not be a "must-try" item on the menu.
As for the drinks, I had the Lychee & Lemongrass Jello and LKC had Soda with Sour Plum.
Photobucket
Lychee & Lemongrass Jello
The lychee & lemongrass jello priced at RM5.50 and tasted quite special. As the name suggested, it had the lychee and the lemongrass taste in the drink. There was some "transparent" jelly in the drink. It was like drinking cincau but the taste was a bit sourish.
Photobucket
Soda with Sour Plum
Priced at RM4.80, there was nothing much special with this drink. Served with a can of F&N Soda Water and sour plums.
Photobucket
Quiet and peaceful environment
Will definitely going there again to try on other food. Recommended to go for those who are looking for something different from local food.

Straight from the American-Italian kitchens, Santini@Suria KLCC offers a wide selection of delicious food fares, from wood fire pizzas to crunchy salads, creamy pasta and grills for weight watchers, all prepared with the freshest blend of ingredients. Some of our delicacies are the Buffalo Bill Wings, Rocky Nachos, Pizza Diavalo, Classic Fajitas and many more.
Santini @ Suria KLCC is one of the many restaurants under the TT Resources Bhd (Tai Thong, in case you don't know). We dropped by at this restaurant on Friday evening to have our dinner before heading back to Ipoh. This restaurant is actually sharing the same lot as the San Francisco Steakhouse (Suria KLCC).

Photobucket
Spaghetti Carbonara
Anyway, lets talk about the food. I had my favourite Spaghetti Carbonara (RM18.90) served with beef Salsicce, egg, cream and parmesan cheese. This meal failed to impress me as the decoration itself was already very dull. There wasn't any decoration on the spaghetti, not even some parsley to "colour" the meal. It was more like the home-cooked pasta. The taste was just too bland. Nothing can be beat the pasta that I had in Pasta Zanmai.

Photobucket
Rib eye steak
LKC also ordered his favourite rib eye steak (RM40+). While this steak did not fail to impress us when served, it failed to impress us with its taste. Apart from the fresh "beefy" smell from the steak, the rest of the dish was rather bland too.

Planet Hollywood, Kuala Lumpur

Yup, this is not something new. It has been in town for at least a decade now but this was our first visit to this well-known restaurant. After walking around Pavillion Kuala Lumpur and did not manage to find something that was within our budget, we headed to this Planet Hollywood. We were quite lucky as there was a promotion for Citibank credit card holder. There was 50% off for selected food on the menu.

Santa Fe Nachos
We ordered Santa Fe Nachos (RM8.75 after 50% discount) as a starter. This crispy tortilla chips were topped with mixed cheddar cheese, pico de gallo, sour cream and jalapenos. It was a very generous serving and we should have treated it as main dish instead.
Anyway, as for the main dish, I had Baked Beef Pasta (RM13 after 50% discount) while LKC had the Southern Fried Chicken (RM26).
Photobucket
Baked Beef Pasta
Penne pasta tossed with cream cheese and tomato sauce, air flown minced beef and topped with mozzarella and parmesan cheese then baked in the oven.
This pasta was rather bland to my taste. Maybe people are getting more health concious nowadays...less sugar, less salt. That's why all the food we had lately was rather tasteless.
Photobucket
Southern Fried Chicken
3 pieces of fresh chicken marinated with Planet Hollywood's seasoning then deep fried till crispy and served with Hollywood coleslaw and French fries
This fried chicken tasted nothing much special. Still the Kentucky "featherless" chicken tastes better.

Buy 1 free 1 during Happy Hours
It was happy hours (until 9pm), so LKC ordered a pint of beer and got another one free-of-charge.
It was quite a cozy place to have a meal there (but do not expect good quality food) with friends or just to have some drinks while enjoying the performance from the live-band.
